KUNAL CHOKSHI KILLED, REVENGE SUSPECTED: POLICE

26^th November, 2014, Mumbai: The Chokshi household today was filled with mourners and people gathering there to pay their last homage to their only son, Kunal Chokshi. The death of Kunal Chokshi was under mysterious circumstances and the police are still investigating the case details. ‘The Curious Case of Chokshi’ which has taken social media by storm has some very interesting facts. Twitteratis have been discussing whether the death of Kunal Chokshi has been a wicked turn of Karma.

Kunal who was studying at National College was known to his classmates as a rich spoilt millionaire kid. This was before he met and started dating one of his fellow classmates, Amruta Naik. Amruta, a meritorious student turned to be a turning point in Kunal’s life. After being together for three years, the couple started facing problems after college. Kunal was warned by the police on several charges of violence and extortion of money. There have also been some drunken driving cases registered against him.

Amruta’s parents being concerned about her spending too much time with Kunal wanted their association to end. Amruta then shifted to Pune for her job and tried her best to end all relations with Kunal. Kunal in the meantime was held by the police on another drunken driving case where he severely injured a man who was riding his bike. He was then granted bail by the Gamdevi Police station with a fine of Rs. 95,000 and with the personal guarantee of his father, Mr. Suresh Chokshi.

 Amruta who had broken all ties with Kunal was surprised to see him at her doorstep on 14^th February, 2014 at midnight. Amruta later claimed in her statement that he had bought her expensive gifts and flowers for Valentine’s Day. After a verbal spat between the two, where Amruta asked Kunal to leave and not try to contact her again, he forcefully entered the house and tried to convince Amruta to get back with him. After almost two hours of discussion and violent verbal abuses, Kunal was observed to lose his cool and hit Amruta. When Amruta tried to retaliate to his physical abuse, he dragged her to the bedroom and allegedly raped her. He left her in the house after which he drove back to Mumbai. Amruta was found unconscious by her roommate in the early hours and rushed to the hospital. The medical reports confirmed sexual assault and the police had arrested Kunal on the charges as per Amruta’s statement.

The case had been going on in the district court for the past nine months while Kunal was granted interim bail.  The court seemed indecisive in the case and the next court hearing was scheduled for 15^th December, 2014. On 24^th November, 2014, Kunal was found dead in his apartment in Khar, Mumbai. Investigators suggest that some sort of strangulation device was used for the murder, possibly fiber wire. The police have stated that the lack of witnesses is making this an especially difficult case to investigate. Local police are at the moment questioning the watchman of the building.

When we contacted Amruta’s parents, we were informed that Amruta has been admitted to the hospital as she was unable to take the news of the murder. Her parents refused to share further details. While the police are investigating the case details, the nation has been debating if the punishment vetted out to the deceased was the right way to go about it or not. While some are of the opinion that if the Indian judiciary is not able to take the right decisions, it is time that the common man fights his own battle for justice, others have condemned the murder and feel that law and order can’t be challenged in such a brutal manner and that the accused would have been punished sooner or later.
